

As a top “showcase” category, mushrooms can significantly impact the overall image of the produce department, but the key to increased sales lies in proper merchandising and cold chain management. By following a few simple best practices, fresh mushrooms can be a transaction builder at retail and produce a halo effect on the entire produce department.
Three Years of Rising Sales
2010 year-end results are in: Fresh mushrooms sales in pounds increased by 3.0% from 2009 to 2010.
At this time last year, fresh mushrooms experienced a 7.7% jump in sales in pounds from 2008 to 2009. With 2010 considered, fresh mushrooms have sustained significant year-over-year sales growth for three years. Fresh mushroom sales also continue to outpace the produce category sales as a whole.
